Attaching a file in Hotmail / Windows Live

One of the most common problems I find non computer people have is the inability to send files in an email... so here's how to do it in Hotmail/ Windows Live email screens

  • know where your file is! - before you can attach a file you need to be able to find it on your computer. If you know where it is but don't know how to browse Windows file system to find it then I suggest you go to the file and right click then select 'send to Desktop' (see pic)

Next, go back to your email screen and click 'new' which will open a new blank email for you to write in

Your email address will be where mine was (before I blacked it out)
The cursor is in the 'to' box waiting for you to put the required email in...

[TOP TIP: fill the recipients name in last and you will never send a half finished email or forget to attach the documents you intend to send]

Click the attachment button (highlighted here in the red box)

and a box will pop up as in the pic below... notice that the second item in the left hand list is desktop (highlighted) click there,

The contents of the Desktop will now be available and all you have to do is select your file and click 'open'

After maybe a second or two (this will vary with the size of your file) you will see that your file has been attached to your email (boxed in red below: see pic)

file attached! Success!
